Remarks Made By Shelby County Commissioner Candidate Julie Ehemann
Shelby County Lincoln Day Dinner, Botkins Ohio, February 3, 2010

“Good evening again - and thanks Chris for letting me have the floor once more for just a few minutes to talk with our fellow Republicans.
Ladies and gentlemen, I know you are fully aware that many citizens in our community are hurting. At last report, the unemployment rate for Shelby County was at an unacceptable 12.5% . Many families are suffering not only from being unemployed, but from being under-employed. These fellow citizens might be our co-workers, - our children may go to school with their children, - but most importantly, they are our neighbors – they are your neighbors.
Without question this recession has put a strain on our local tax base, adversely affecting all those services we have come to expect, and frankly take for granted, from our local government. And before I say anymore I want to acknowledge the work performed by Commissioner Toomey and Commissioner Kleinhans, who saw this coming nearly two years ago and took steps then to keep us in business and make our County and our Party proud.
For me, the most disturbing trend of the downturn is one of increased local drug use, domestic violence, and violent crimes. This was all rare for Shelby County just a few short years ago.
As both a professional woman and working mom I see on a daily basis the worry on the faces of my customers when they consider their own personal financial and personal security. When I look in the mirror I see the worry of a mom and wife wondering about the future of my child as she grows up in a community struggling with drugs and the crime and violence it breeds.
Ladies and gentlemen it’s time for a fresh perspective in our local government. It’s time to start thinking about the future of our citizens and the future of our children. It’s time for local solutions to local problems. Instead of ‘all politics is local’ how about ‘all solutions are local’?
How about the County partnering with the Sheriff , the Prosecutor and our dedicated local Judges to put the necessary resources in place to make Shelby County a model for cooperation and a model for crime prevention. How about a third Commissioner who, like Jack and Larry have been, is accountable to the people, who understands their issues and isn’t afraid to look for local solutions to local problems. And finally, how about a Commissioner who believes that government is best served in small doses.
Ladies and gentlemen, Mr. Chairman, members of the Central Committee, my name is Julie Ehemann - I believe that all solutions are local, and I am committed to working hard to find those solutions on behalf of the citizens of Shelby County.
Therefore, this is why I am announcing tonight that I will be a candidate for Shelby County Commissioner on the Republican ticket this fall”.
